LANDSCAPE INFRASTRUCTURE

Eduardo Rico and Enriqueta Llabres will participate in Landscape Infrastructure Symposium, organised by Pierre Belanger in GSD, Harvard, the days 23rd and 24th of March.  This is a two-day symposium exploring the future of infrastructure as seen through the emergence of landscape as system and strategy for contemporary urbanization. Looking beyond the overexertion of engineering and inertia of planning, presentations and panel discussions focus on the growing agency of ecology with strategies that respond to predominant challenges facing urban economies today, including urban renewal, population mobilities, carbon & nitrogen flows, material resources, and climate dynamics. Seen through the practices of ecologists, historians, urbanists and geographers, presentations discuss the ecological inflexion and the design detour that engineering is undergoing in response to contemporary economic, ecologic and social challenges.

IN PROGRESS: RELATIONAL URBANISM IN UCL, LONDON

Eduardo Rico and Enriqueta Llabres give a talk in UCL to students in the Advanced Architectural Studies module regarding the research on Relational Modelling, both from an academic and theoretical perspective, but also the joint venture Relational Urbanism – Arup pushing design interfaces as urban planning documentation.

RELATIONAL URBANISM IN HARVARD, GSD

Eduardo Rico and Enriqueta Llabres conducted a one week workshop in the 1212 Landscape Core design studio in GSD Havard. The work targeted a systems based approach to the understanding of formaiton of building typologies as well as the relationship between urban fabric and critical concepts of nature. EDUARDO RICO AND ALFREDO RAMIREZ LECTURE IN THE AA, WED 1ST FEB 2012, 6PM

Alfredo Ramirez and Eduardo Rico will be talking about the recent work by Groundlab and Plasmastudio, currently being exhibited in the AA Gallery. The lecture will describe the theoretical aspects underpinning the work in the context of a growing currency of Landscape Urb...anism as design practice. The lecture shall make special emphasis on the tension between the aspirations of a Landscape Urbanism informed practice and the practical implications of working in the context of fast growing economies.

CRITICAL TERRITORIES EXHIBITION, LONDON, 14 JAN - 11 FEB 2012

Eduardo Rico, Alfredo Ramirez, Eva Castro and Holger Kehne will be showing work featured as part of Critical Territories exhibition in the Architectural Association, London. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a lecture on 1st February of the work of Groundlab - Plasmastudio.

Critical Territories presents the work of two practices, Groundlab and Plasma Studio, which share a transdisciplinary approach and operate at multiple scales, from product and building design to landscape and masterplanning. The installation – a site-specific grid arrangement of light boxes covered with technical drawings – has been conceived to immerse visitors in the systemic approach of the practices and their preoccupation with grids, ground and context. A plethora of conceptual and presentation models floating loosely within this grid communicate recurring aims, ideas and spatial and phenomenological effects. Among the projects on show will be the Xian International Horticultural Expo and the Longgang Masterplan.

EDUARDO RICO LECTURES AT GENEVE

Eduardo Rico will be giving a lecture in Beyond Disciplines Seminar in HEPIA School, Geneve on 13 December 2011, regarding his profesisonal engagement in his work at Arup, Groundlab and Landscape Urbnanism.

EDUARDO RICO FEATURES ARTICLE IN INFRASTRUCTURAL URBANISM

DOM Publishers, Berlin, has just released the book “Infrastructural Urbanism. Addressing the In – Between”. This includes the article “The role of Infrastructural landscape in the image of the city” by Relational Urbanism Academic Director Master Eduardo Rico. This paper describes how urban infrastructures bear the potential to redefine the role of public open space due to their networked condition and the qualities of their interstitial landscape. It then moves to describe how his research in the Ma Landscape Urbanism in the AA taps into this potential, by expanding the functional dimension of infrastructure encompassing other social and architectural aspects across multiple scales.
