PATRICK SCHUMACHER LECTURE AND CONTRIBUTION TO RELATIONAL URBANISM STUDIO

The Autopoiesis of Architecture and Societal Function of Architecture was the title of  the lecture given by Patrick Schumacher in the Berlage as invitation from the Relational Urbanism Studio. In the lecture Patrick outlined the case made in his latest publication The Autopoiesis of Architecture, of the disciplinary autonomy of architecture when considered as a system of communication. During the debate that followed, further remarks opened  by Vedran Mimica and Eduardo Rico amongst others explored the implications of the statement both in its relations to engineering and other social spheres.

Patrick also participated in a short review of the work of the students (pictures with Eduardo Rico and Vedran Mimica) where specific aspects of the course methodology and approach to a relational understanding of the city were discussed in the context of his intervention.

IHS-BERLAGE WORKSHOP: URBAN LAND MANAGEMENT & POLICY

On May 6th, the students of Relational Urbanism at the Berlage and the Institute for Housing and Urban Development (IHS http://www.ihs.nl/) under the direction of Carlos Morales, worked in a combined session as part of the collaboration between the two institutions on the study of regional proposals for the outskirts of Istanbul.

During this workshop, the IHS group introduced the economic models and that have been developed for the specific context of Istanbul. Both courses have been working in the same site, sharing information and clues as to what the negotiation tools and strategies might be in the context of Anravutkoy.

HARVARD GSD 23rd MARCH: CITIES, MODELS AND SYSTEMIC UTOPIAS

Eduardo Rico will be giving a lecture in GSD Harvard as part of the week long workshop that Enriqueta Llabres and him will be teaching within the Landscape Architecture Programme directed by Chris Reed.

The lecture describes the practices of Relational Urbanism, where concepts linked to the cybernetics and system theory form the basis of a renewed critical perspective framing associative and digital techniques; moving beyond the false promises of the parameter and the performative design. The turf which Relational Urbanism claims as its own is that of envisaging new regimes of urbanism which derive their raison d’etre from a spatial design rooted in the material and temporal specificities of the territory and where the metabolic nature of the environment is critically balanced with concepts of social and environmental justice, in short, a laboratory for a new critical territorialism.

RELATIONAL URBANISM IN HARVARD GSD, 22-29 MARCH 2011

During the week of 22 to 29 of March 2011, Eduardo Rico and Enriqueta Llabres will be conducting a short workshop about Relational Urbanism techniques within the FLUX CITY studio, directed by Chris Reed in the Landscape Architecture programme in Harvard, Boston. The workshop will be accompanied by a lecture on the 23rd on the current developments of relational approaches towards the city.

NATURES AND TYPES, MID PRESENTATION, BERLAGE

The second pinup of the Territorialism studio shall finish with the fabrication of a clear idea of a typology which shall fit the overall purpose of the course in terms of functioning as a definition of a typical description of the small scale spatial variations, a well as the locus of a wider urban discourse dealing with social and ecological relations inherent in the territory of Arnavutkoy.

ERIK SWYNGEDOW IN RELATIONAL URBANISM, BERLAGE

On 27th January,  the critical geographer Erik  Swyngedouw will be giving a lecture within the framework of the course, dealing with the political ramifications of the term nature within the urban discourse, pointing to current depolitizicing character of the term and the potential mechanism to turn it into the base for a truly critical urban agenda.

On January 15th, the first student presentation of Territorialism course will be held in the Berlage Institute. The jury will be composed of Vedran Mimica, Dean of Berlage, Udo Garritzmann, architect and writer, Enik Tanu, TU delft, Marieke Francke, Rotterdam Biennale.
